I designed the book for the thesis of Beatrix Shelton at Parsons School of Design in New York City. The project explores 100 Marxist sites across New York through archival material, images, and research-based entries, revealing a political geography of the city that sits beneath its dominant image as a financial and capitalist center.
The design is inspired by classic Swiss graphic design, but introduces a restrained experimental system based on repetition, rhythm, and controlled variation. The layout uses simple structures, repeated typographic arrangements, and a strict visual logic to create both clarity and conceptual tension.
This formal constraint reflects the project’s political framework. The repeated layouts, limited typographic system, and restrained composition echo ideas of collectivity, standardization, and the everyday conditions associated with communism, while still allowing the archival material to build a layered and readable narrative.
